Making Sense of Web Search:  What's the Difference Between Search Engines?

Internet search engines compile their data by cataloging the Web using one or both of two methods: through the deployment of specialized, automated software search programs - or 'bots', as they are commonly called; by employing teams of actual human indexers that physically catalogue the Web.  The diagram below should help you better understand where search engine results come from for various search sites and how current those results are likely to be.  The diagram can also give you some idea about the role of 'paid search' on the Internet and how that may impact the results you may be shown on the first page or two of any search result.
